Does Schema Markup Actually Get You Cited by AI?

Two independent sources point the same way: structured data and FAQ schema rank among the strongest signals for being cited in AI answers. Here is the evidence, and the limits.

The short answer

Two independent bodies of work point the same way. Structured data, and FAQ sections paired with schema, are among the strongest signals associated with being cited by AI answer engines. Neither is a guarantee.

Evidence 1: page quality predicts citation

GEO-16 (arXiv:2509.10762, 2025) audited 1,100 unique URLs across 1,702 citations from Brave Summary, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. Pillars related to metadata and freshness, semantic HTML, and structured data showed the strongest association with being cited. Source: https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.10762

Evidence 2: FAQ plus schema correlates with citation

HubSpot's State of AEO analysis of citation themes reports that pages with FAQ sections are more likely to be cited in AI Overviews, and that FAQ sections paired with schema markup correlate with higher citation rates in Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. What that does and does not mean

Both sources are observational. They show association, not causation, and neither promises that adding schema will get a specific page cited. Two specific limits are worth stating:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does schema markup help you get cited by AI?

Two independent sources associate structured data with a higher likelihood of citation: GEO-16 found structured data among the strongest pillars, and HubSpot reports that FAQ sections paired with schema correlate with higher citation rates. Both are observational.

Is FAQ schema worth adding?

GEO-16 and HubSpot both associate FAQ content and schema with citation. Add it to pages that genuinely contain an FAQ section, and keep the markup consistent with the visible page.
